We have exciting news to share with our Lake Charles families, residents, and community. The Sage Oak was featured in Multi-Housing News, one of the nation’s leading senior housing and multifamily real estate publications, as part of its special coverage of the 2026 NIC Spring Conference. Loe Hornbuckle, Operating Partner of The Sage Oak, represented our communities on a high-profile panel that highlighted the very model of care we practice here every day.
A National Stage for a Local Vision
The NIC Spring Conference, held in Nashville, Tennessee, is one of the most prestigious gatherings in the senior housing industry, attended by investors, operators, researchers, and care professionals from across the country. Loe joined fellow innovators on a panel session titled “Residential Care Reimagined: The Rise of Small House Models,” which examined how boutique, small-house operators like The Sage Oak are emerging as a leading solution to the senior housing challenges of our time.
The discussion explored how small-house communities tackle some of the industry’s toughest barriers — from staffing and affordability to limited financing and scaling challenges — while delivering a care experience that large institutional facilities simply cannot replicate.
Our Story: Built for Lake Charles
The Sage Oak of Lake Charles has a remarkable story of its own. Our community was named Best Standalone Memory Care Design in the 2021 Senior Housing News Architecture & Design Awards, and it earned that recognition for good reason. Designed with five 8,500 square-foot homes, each housing up to 16 residents, our community was purpose-built to deliver both the intimacy of home and the infrastructure of professional care.
The design, born of a concept Loe sketched on a napkin, challenged the conventions of senior living architecture. Open kitchens sit at the heart of each home, where residents gather to watch meals being prepared and share in the warmth of daily life. These aren’t just design features; they are expressions of a philosophy that puts people first.
Why the Small-House Model Is the Future
As the senior housing industry faces a coming wave of demand from the aging Baby Boomer generation — and a supply pipeline that is nowhere near keeping pace — innovative models like ours are being looked to as part of the solution. Our approach demonstrates that person-centered care, delivered in a home-like environment, can be both operationally sound and deeply meaningful.
National occupancy rates for senior housing have now climbed for seventeen consecutive quarters, according to NIC MAP data. Families are looking for care, and they deserve options that feel like home. The Sage Oak of Lake Charles is proud to be that option.
